Though Miriam has been with Iris since May 2005, she returned to Pemba in December 2006, after a season in Canada, this time returning under the umbrella of IMC. Miriam's home is in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where she was employed in the graphic design and marketing industry. She was actively involved in worship at her church and in a ministry to addicts.
From the time she was a child Miriam had a passion for missions, with her toy nurse kit and a little flannel graph set complete with African people, animals and shrubs! Time and again the Lord has supernaturally led Miriam to wait on Him in the knowledge that missions would be in her future.
While completing a bachelor degree in Bible/Missions, she spent summers as a ranch camp director, excited about leading kids to Jesus. After Bible college she began to encounter the presence of God on a deeper level, and to understand the supernatural workings of the Spirit. During this time she had a powerful dream in which she was in another country as a missionary with other young people. "In the dream I felt like I was finally doing what I was created to do and it was so wonderful. After I awoke, the presence of God was so real and precious and I was noticeably broken with awe and love for Him. This lasted for about a week, but something had changed inside."
When several years later, a trusted friend loaned Miriam the Baker's book, There is Always Enough, she instantly knew that her heart was already captured by a like-minded vision. It wasn't long before she found herself in Mozambique.
Miriam attended the our first International School of Missions in Pemba in 2005. Since that time she has with great excitement continued in evangelistic outreaches, where often entire villages turn to follow Jesus. She has helped instruct widows and older girls how to sew, taught school children English, and privately tutored a few who were struggling with school. She is currently looking after four horses that have been donated to Iris Ministries and helps children to ride. "I see this gift of horses to our children as a demonstration of the utter extravagance of God among the poorest of the poor." She treasures any opportunity to hang out with her much-loved African children and is helping to lead a teenage girls' mentoring group. Miriam is honored that God would allow her to be a part of an unprecedented revival which is sweeping across the land and bringing hundreds of thousands to Jesus.
"Always remember that God has perfect timing. Hang onto the dreams and promises God has given you! Do not be afraid to ask Him for greater things. And when He gives you an opportunity, go for it--don't let fear hold you back!"
