The Pemba Base continues to expand in size and complexity. We now have over 175 children living here. The 150 Missions School students have just left, but planning is already well along for the next school beginning in October. A new group of student-pastors has begun Bible school classes this week. And our number of visitors at Pemba is more than double last year’s figures (averaging 30-40/month). We also have 450 children attending our newly opened Christian primary school. About 100 of these are our own Iris children in Grades 0-5 and the rest are poor village children who are able to attend school free and receive a hot meal at lunch time.
Heidi has restructured the leadership at Pemba. Don is now Associate Director under her, and has full responsibility during Heidi’s frequent travels. Elizabeth is a member of the Leadership Team, representing a number of areas of Iris’ personnel and organizational development.
For the past several months, Don and Elizabeth worked with a team of 14 from their home church in PEI, who visited Iris in August. The team accepted the challenge of designing and building a children’s playground for a local village. They came with high expectations—and returned home with every hope exceeded! The playground itself is without equal in all of Mozambique, and much love flowed freely between visitors and villagers during the process.
